5 Ways to Boost Your Kid’s Immune System

The immune system protects your kid against a plethora of diseases by fighting against pathogens, viruses, parasites etc. However, at times the germs succeed in invading the body and make your child sick. It is then that parents start worrying about boosting the child’s immunity. This idea of making the immune system stronger is enticing and parents frantically search for ways and means to do so.They try their hand at several things such as using herbal preparations, changing lifestyle, improving diet etc. But to their disappointment they don’t achieve much. A nutrient rich diet has a direct effect on the immune system. Therefore special care should be taken with your child’s meal planning.

Include plant based protein (legumes) and animal protein in their diet. Add garlic, ginger, pepper, turmeric etc to their meals. These spices have antibacterial properties. Green leafy vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, spinach), sprouts, squashes and fruits should be a part of their daily diet. Adequate fluid should be consumed (warmer fluids) to keep the body hydrated. Herbal tea, soup etc could be helpful. Consuming Salt water solutions every 2-3 hours could keep microbes at bay by flushing the sinuses. Food items rich in vitamin A, B2, B6, C, D, E and minerals such as selenium, zinc etc should be given to kids in adequate quantities.

Certain food items could have detrimental effect on the immune system. These include white flour, desserts, sweets, and refined grain products. Make sure that your child consumes minimal amount of these things.

For kids a minimum of 8-10 hours of sound sleep is necessary to stimulate the immune system. Sleep deprived children feel overtired and are more susceptible to microbes. A healthy habit for parents would be to send the kids to bed early enough so as to restore the immune system to normal.


Exercise has always played a key role in boosting the immune system. Children should be taught simple exercises that they can practice every morning and evening for 30 minutes without much exertion. Simple breathing and meditation exercises could relax the mind and aid in better sleeping.


Food items rich in healthy bacteria such as yogurt could boost immunity to a great extent. This is because the bacteria in them are similar to the ones found in the human
intestine and aid in flushing out the toxins.

  • Multi-vitamin/mineral: If your child is not ready to consume vegetables and fruits, these tablets could serve the same purpose as vegetables.

  • Natural Anti-bacterial Herbs: Herbs such as andrographis, green tea extract, astragalus, echinacea etc have an anti-microbial effect and should be given to kids to boost their immune system.
